Add a watermark to your photos
A watermark is a name or a logo laid over a photo, faint enough not to spoil it and visible enough to say whose it is. In Pictius you add it as a layer and set its opacity and blend mode. If you have many photos, record the steps once as an action and apply them to all of them with Batch, in your browser.

Add a text watermark to one photo
This takes a minute and keeps the watermark editable until you export.
- Open the photo with File ▸ Open… (Ctrl+O).
- Press T for the Text tool, choose a font, a size and a color (white or light gray suits most photos), click where the watermark should go and type, for example, © Your Name. Press Ctrl+Enter to finish.
- Press V for the Move tool and drag the text into place. With one layer selected, the Align buttons in the Properties panel line it up with the edges of the canvas.
- Lower the layer’s opacity in the Layers panel, and try a blend mode such as Overlay or Soft Light so the photo shows through.
- Save the image with File ▸ Export As… as JPG, PNG or WebP. Keep a .pictius copy with File ▸ Save if you might move the watermark later.
Use a logo instead
Choose File ▸ Open as Layer… and pick your logo; a PNG with a transparent background works best. It is placed in the center on a new layer. To resize it, choose Edit ▸ Free Transform, drag a corner with Shift held to keep its proportions, and press Enter. File ▸ Place Embedded… adds it as a smart object instead, which you can scale again later without losing quality.
To read well on both light and dark areas, add Layer ▸ Layer Effects ▸ Drop Shadow… or Layer ▸ Layer Effects ▸ Stroke… Placing the watermark over part of the subject, rather than in an empty corner, also makes it harder to crop away.
Watermark many photos with an action
Typing is not recorded in actions, so the trick is to paste a finished watermark:
- Make the watermark in its own document: File ▸ New… with Background set to Transparent and a size just around the text or logo. Add it, then press Ctrl+A and Ctrl+C to copy it.
- Open one of your photos and Window ▸ Actions (Alt+F9). Click + to create a new action, name it and click Record.
- Press Ctrl+V to paste. Then choose Layer ▸ Align ▸ Right Edges and Layer ▸ Align ▸ Bottom Edges: with one layer selected, they align it to the canvas.
- For a margin, choose Edit ▸ Free Transform, press Shift+Left and Shift+Up a few times (10 pixels each) and press Enter.
- Set the opacity and blend mode in Layer ▸ Layer Properties…, which is recorded (the Layers panel slider is not). Add Layer ▸ Flatten Image if you like, then click Stop.
- Choose File ▸ Automate ▸ Batch…, pick your action, click Choose Files…, choose a format and where the results go, and click Run.
Good to know before a batch
- The Paste step uses whatever image is on the clipboard when the action runs. If you have copied something else since, copy the watermark again first.
- The watermark keeps its size in pixels. If your photos have very different sizes, record Image ▸ Image Size… as the first step so they all share the same width.
- Results go into a ZIP archive, as separate downloads, or straight into a folder in browsers that allow it, such as Chrome and Edge.
Frequently asked questions
What opacity should a watermark have?
Somewhere between 30% and 60% is a common choice: visible at a glance without hiding the photo. Look at the result at the size it will be published, since a small image needs a bolder watermark.
Can I add a watermark to many photos at once?
Yes. Record the steps as an action, as described above, and run it with File ▸ Automate ▸ Batch… The results are exported as PNG, JPG, WebP, PSD or .pictius files.
Can I reuse my watermark next time?
Save the watermark document with File ▸ Save as a .pictius file and open it whenever you need it. Actions are kept in your browser; use Export Set… in the Actions panel menu to keep a copy as a file.
Can someone remove the watermark?
Any visible watermark can be cropped or retouched away with enough effort. Placing it over the subject, rather than in a corner, makes that harder. Inside your .pictius file it stays a separate layer you can change.
Are my photos uploaded to add the watermark?
No. Pictius edits and exports your photos in the browser, on your own computer, including when you process a whole batch.
